Closed Projects

Renewable, bio-based compounds are supposed to substitute chemicals obtained from gas, oil and coal. The work up of the products derived from renewable resources usually requires a breakdown of natural macromolecules, such as lignin or polysaccarides to small molecules, which can be applied as feedstock for chemical processes. The degradation of the natural polymers and the conversion of the resulting renewable feedstocks (e.g. some form of sugar) to smaller molecules is usually achieved by a combination of physico-chemical and biotechnological means (so called White Biotechnology). However, these reactions do not usually lead to one clean product but to a complex mixture of products usually solved in water, which have to be separated prior to further utilization. This separation process, however, may be quite expensive. It is therefore desirable to develop better means of separation, e.g. the catalytic workup o the reaction mixtures, leading to more easily separable products. The major challenge on the way to this goal is the development of water stable catalysts and their immobilization to ensure their reusability. The goal of this work is the integration of molecular catalysis into biotechnological processes to achieve basis chemicals for the chemical industry more easily from renewable resources
