Water is our most important natural resource. Population growth and demographic shifts, urbanization, non-point and point source pollution, and impacts of climate change represent significant challenges for the preservation and functioning of water related systems. Building upon the disciplinary strengths and demonstrated excellence at TUM a coordinated research focus has been launched that focuses on pressing issues related to the water – energy – food nexus. In support of this effort, in the IGSSE Focus Area Water has selected nine research projects that will focus on evaluating and modeling impacts of climatic extremes, such as drought, in forest die-back, investigating the soil water holding capacity to secure agricultural productivity and developing monitoring strategies to detect harmful cyanobacteria remotely.
