IGSSE Fellowship

Call for applications

IGSSE Fellowship 2016

IGSSE and the Stabsstelle Chancengleichheit seek to support one outstanding female doctoral researcher or young postdoc with a strong interdisciplinary mindset pursuing an academic career. In accordance to TUM´s diversity policy, we intend to alleviate the transition from PhD phase into an academic (postdoc) career, especially for those with children and families. Moreover, the fellowship is intended to help the awardee to develop her research portfolio, increase international networking and raise funds to secure funding for further career steps and the build-up of a research group.

Applicants should prove excellent research and international experiences and show how the fellowship will support their further career steps. The successful candidate is expected to complement our graduate school´s research portfolio

  • Ÿ  Computational Science & Engineering
  • Ÿ  Life Sciences & Biomedical Engineering
  • Ÿ  Nanotechnology & Advanced Materials
  • Ÿ  Energy, Geodynamics & Environment
  • Ÿ  Biomaterials & Biophysics
  • Ÿ  Water Science & Technology

Previous expertise with IGSSE´s interdisciplinary and international goals is a requirement.

Applications must comprise

  • ŸMotivation letter
  • ŸWork plan for the employment period (including strategical plans for career, publications and third party funding)
  • ŸElucidation on future enhancement of interdisciplinary collaboration within an IGSSE Project Team (with special regard to experiences in interdisciplinary research  contexts)
  • CV
  • Copy of university degree certificates
  • ŸPublication list
  • Ÿ2 letters of recommendation (1 from science, 1 from engineering), one of which should be from international faculty

We offer

ŸA funding scheme for aspiring female researchers, consisting of a 1-year TV-L E13, 100% paygrade fellowship, including funding for travel, equipment, childcare and professional qualifications, to be complemented by the Laura Bassi-Award, securing the same paygrade for an additional 6 months. The Laura Bassi funding may be extended for another 6 months after a positive evaluation.

Ÿ Preference will be given to candidates in challenging family situations or disabled candidates.

Please send your application to IGSSE project manager Jo-Anna Küster [kuester(at)zv.tum.de]. Application deadline is 18 November 2016. An invitation to an interview with members of the selection board is scheduled for the end of December 2016. Funding will start 1 January 2016.

2015 Fellowship

With great pleasure we announce the IGSSE Diversity Fellowship 2015 awardee Ms Khatereh Polous of team 7.07 Event Detection and Visualization of VGI. With three first author publications Khatereh has successfully accomplished her time as IGSSE doctoral researcher and is about to finish her dissertation in Februrary. She will commence her postdoctoral investigations in spring 2016.

'The multidisciplinary nature of my PhD research was an amazing journey from the beginning to the very end. I tried to bridge the gap between engineering and technological arena with social science and even philosophy. Now, I am very happy to receive the IGSSE postdoc fellowship 2016; Indeed, I see it as a perfect opportunity to further develop and deepen scientific findings of my PhD research. I am sure that the IGSSE Diversity Fellowship 2016 opens up a new chapter in my scientific life and gives a fascinating momentum to the direction of my future career, ' Khatereh says.

Dr. Olga Spackova

2014 Fellowship

Dr. Olga Spackova, project team leader of Water08-AdaptRisk has joined TUM in 2011 and has been a researcher at the Engineering Risk Analysis Group since. Her current research topics are risk-based decision making, quantification and optimization of adaptive risk mitigation and natural hazard (flood) modeling. Olga has one daughter and is from the Czech Republic.

´I feel very honoured and grateful to receive the IGSSE Postdoc fellowship. It gives me the possibility to follow up on our currently running AdaptRisk project (also funded by IGSSE) and to deepen and expand my recent research in optimisation of adaptive systems under uncertainty. After a maternal leave with my first daughter and a research stay at the University of Colorado Boulder (which were both very enriching experiences), I can now smoothly return to my office at TUM and fully concentrate myself on this very interesting topic,' writes Olga.
